USING MOTELS FOR PATIENTS BEFORE AND AFTER SURGERY

Bed occupancy rates for Capital and Coast DHB in the 12 months to July reached 90 percent and above for most of the year. Of course given the unpredictability of some admissions, which include those from outside the region, 100 percent occupancy is not desirable – some reserve in bed numbers is always required. Lack of intensive care beds is of course the major concern.

However it is a concern that some patients may be checked into motels both before and after surgery “in cases where it is safe for them”. Hopefully this practice is very limited.
